Inspiration for the April Fabric of Protest workshop was May Day, which originated as a pagan festival but is also now known as International Workers’ Day. We stitched messages of support for our essential workers onto ribbons, evocative of the ribbons on maypoles, to be left in public spaces as a reminder of the valuable work they do.

During the pandemic the term essential workers was frequently used for those who worked through the last two years to keep us all safe and fed. We now rarely hear the term essential or key workers. They have always been there; before, during and after these challenging times. These valuable workers deserve a much better deal and continued respect from society.

‘The 'Frith Manor Community Flag' is a celebration of diversity taking a deep dive into what it means to be British in 2022. Designed by artist Gil Mualem-Doron, it was displayed at the Arts Depot N12 alongside his exhibition 'The Fabric of our Nation'.

In February and March at the Fabric of Protest @phmmcr we discussed the role of migrant workers in our society, particularly during the outbreak of COVID. Workers in health and care, agriculture, retail jobs and factories, largely migrant workers, were previously overlooked but now regarded as key workers, essential in keeping society functioning during the last two years.

Images of these messages will be shared with the Refugee Council as part of their “Write your message” campaign and the hearts will be given to refugees locally who are facing a challenging and uncertain future.

This heart is smaller and more subdued in colour than my first heart. My thoughts were that this ‘pocket heart’ could be carried discreetly, as a reassurance at those times of loneliness or unpleasantness.’

I want to create a contrast between the words and the ribbons we associate with sweet young girls. ‘Where’s your humanity?
The proposed Nationality and Borders Bill was the theme of October’s Fabric of Protest workshop - stitched borders, the frayed edges symbolising the blurring of boundaries and the precariousness of those seeking a place of safety. The bill is seeking to fundamentally change how asylum seekers to Britain are dealt with, placing yet further obstacles in their way by creating a discriminatory two tier asylum system. These proposed changes are both criminal and inhumane.

The textured fabric I have used in my border represents all the barriers, boundaries and hurdles those seeking sanctuary already have to cross making their way to places of safety. The wording in the footprints. The orange heart is a symbol of solidarity with refugees.

‘I thought long and hard about stitch, then I realised that stitch is what has got me through the last 18 months. When the world spirals out of control, my way of getting back some form of control is to stitch. It focuses my mind, it slows my brain, and helps push away all the noise out there. At times, when the news is not great, I’d say to myself, keep your head down and stitch, keep your head down and stitch, keep your head down and stitch! In Melbourne, Australia, we are in our 6th lockdown, and nothing has changed.
I just keep stitching. From March 2020 to January 2021, all my stitching came together in the quilt above.’

‘I can’t look at this painting now, of hopes, dreams and safe spaces, without seeing the unfolding peril of thousands of brave and vulnerable Afghani women and young girls, and the shocking unravelling of their aspirations and dreams of education and a better life and future for themselves, their country and their children.

In the safety of our homes we watch the news aghast and horrified as a population is trapped, terrified, in shock, horror, displaced and disbelief.

Some are married against their will, others murdered or seen falling out of the sky ... again ...

I thank God that I was born in Australia and at this moment I pray that Australia can rise and open our arms, send aeroplanes and give refuge, hope and thankyou to as many as we can.

‘Rezia Wahid’s Mosque Project’ began from an initiative in Lockdown 2020 when gatherings for Eid in May were prohibited. I started a community project where families decorated my mosque template shape and displayed them in their windows. This year I invited people around the world to decorate my template with their designs and patterns; from these I transferred the spirit of the art onto a series of perspex off cuts to form an installation for celebrating Eid ul Adha 2021 at Fellowship Square, Walthamstow. I have inserted my own poetic responses as paintings and cut-out lines of poetry inside the clear display column representing the major Islamic sights: Mecca, Prophets Mosque and Dome of Rock.’

We hope you join us in our excitement at being invited to show CORONAQUILT - @artrefuge_ ‘s ongoing digital public art project - as part of Ovada’s exhibition about the resilience of artists and arts organisations during the Covid19 pandemic.

Alongside a large table covered in our map tablecloth used in refugee day centre spaces and with a mobile clinic in Calais, northern France, we plan to project the entire CORONAQUILT onto the gallery wall. Taken from our website www.coronaquilt.org we hope to show a cross-section of images (labelled with text/Instagram/name/date/location) individually filling the space at intervals - around 130 in total on rotation. Example projections will follow soon...!

The original invitation will be posted on the wall as follows:
“When people across the world are being asked to isolate themselves from one another within communities, Art Refuge is thinking of creative ways to bring us together. Building on our work with refugees, we invite you to sit around a virtual community table and help create a patchwork tablecloth. Whether at home alone or on lock down with family, struggling in a camp or displaced on an island, whatever your age, and wherever you come from, we welcome you to take up this invitation to create a piece of the Coronaquilt on the theme of daily rituals.” March 2020.

‘Last year, around this time, we were complacent

‘Last year, around this time, we were complacent in of one of the worst policy decisions in history. With no safety net and no surety about food, money, and health care from their workplaces or the govt, countless migrant workers were forced to walk hundreds of miles from the cities they built to the towns and villages they call home. Many struggled for food, water and essential services all over the country. Why? All because of a ridiculously planned lockdown coupled with systemic inequality as all forms of transport (except flights which were shut after a couple of days' notice because you can't anger rich savarna folk) were abruptly shut down. Time and again we are reminded of this leadership's consistent indulgence in necropolitics and complete disregard for the lives of those pushed to the margins. A year later, there is still no accountability and no intention to offer redressal to those who suffered.
And more and more policies are being pushed which further inequality and disregard our people. Will we ever learn? Or will we wilfully let people suffer in the quest to reach home?’

On the 12th March Boris Johnson addressed the UK and told us “that many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time”.
As we went into our first lockdown there was 335 deaths.
Today on the UK’s #lockdownanniversary we have over 126,000 deaths, each one someone’s beloved 💔
If we held a minutes’s silence for each death we would be silent for 87 days.
So much heartbreaking loss, grief and rage.’

In mid March 2020, when people across the world were being asked to isolate themselves from one another within communities, @artrefuge_ was thinking of creative ways to bring us together. Building on our work with refugees, we have since offered art as a thread to connect us, and to offer hope and ways of coping through the coronavirus. We’ve posted at least one image on each day since 20.03.2020.

We invited you to sit around a virtual community table and help create a patchwork tablecloth based on Daily Rituals that are helping us cope through these challenging times.

The contributions across generations have touched on loss, illness, isolation, displacement, refugees, politics, protests, human rights, social justice, race, gender, identity, seasons, weather & climate, anger, sadness, shame, loneliness, hope, joy, compassion, humour, and much more.

The contributions to date from 30 or more countries around the World and hundreds of individuals and community groups act as a collective testimony to resilience.

‘At the February Fabric of Protest workshop we looked at health and safety issues related to garment workers.
Nearly 10 years after the Dhaka factory fire garment workers are still going to work fearing for their lives. The fire in November 2012 killed at least 117 workers and more than 200 were injured.
Fire safety regulations are often poorly enforced resulting in frequent fires.
On 12 March 2021 a factory fire at Okhala, New Delhi broke out at 2am. There were no casualties reported but 27 fire tenders attended the scene to extinguish the fire.
On 8 March 2021 1 worker died and more than 20 injured at a fire in Gaipur, Bangladesh.
The Cairo fire on 11 March 2021 killed at least 20 workers and injured more than 200.
Garment workers should not be paying with their lives to satisfy our desire for cheap clothing.’
